DEERFOOT TRAIL WIDENING

FALL 2024 PROJECT UPDATE

Additional core lanes are being added to Deerfoot Trail to increase capacity. North of Memorial Drive, the widening will add a fourth continuous lane in each direction and south of Peigan Trail, the road will be widened to three continuous lanes in each direction.

Airport Trail to Memorial Drive

North of Memorial Drive, the widening is being completed in sections as part of the interchange improvement contracts.

New stormwater infrastructure is being installed for the 15-kilometre length of the improvements to upgrade the existing aging infrastructure and accommodate additional runoff from the new lanes.

New lanes open

The new lanes between Airport Trail and Beddington Trail NW / 11 Street NE are open. Between Beddington Trail NW / 11 Street NE and McKnight Boulevard, paving and streetlight installation are ongoing.

Continuing work

Work in the median to construct the new lanes south of McKnight Boulevard will continue into 2025.

Peigan Trail to Ivor Strong Bridge

From north of Glenmore Trail to Ivor Strong Bridge, the majority of Deerfoot Trail widening is expected to progress over the 2025 construction season.

This past year, construction activities took place at the southern Deerfoot Trail Improvement Areas to prepare for widening. Activities at the various areas included foundation work, building of Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls, and utility work.
