BEDDINGTON TRAIL NW

& 11 STREET NE

FALL 2024 PROJECT UPDATE

The new connections from northbound 11 Street NE to Beddington Trail NW and Deerfoot Trail opened to traffic on October 26, 2024. About 24,000 people work at the Calgary International Airport and many businesses in the surrounding area are related to goods movement to and from the airport. These new connections provide an efficient link to the goods movement road network and will improve travel in this area by allowing commercial vehicles to access Deerfoot Trail north of 64 Avenue NE and Beddington Trail NW.

Ramp construction

Work on the ramps began in 2023, lowering the grade in some areas around ten metres.

By the spring of 2024, underground utilities had been installed and work on the road structure began.

Stormwater management

The Beddington Trail NW / 11 Street NE improvements include a new stormwater pond to accommodate drainage from the new and existing infrastructure. Stormwater management systems are an important part of protecting the environment, preventing water pollution and reducing flooding. Wet ponds, like the one being constructed here, capture and temporarily retain stormwater long enough for some of the sediments and pollutants to settle out, helping to return cleaner water to our rivers and streams.

To avoid traffic disruptions on Deerfoot Trail, trenchless drilling (tunneling) was used to install a pipe under the northbound lanes to connect the new drainage pipe in the median to the new stormwater pond.

Open water areas are desirable habitats for several species of birds. However, to minimize the chance of flying birds colliding with the planes taking off from the airport immediately to the east, the same wire fence technology used by the Calgary Airport has been installed over this stormwater pond to discourage birds from nesting.
