IVOR STRONG BRIDGE

FALL 2024 CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
As we wrap up the 2024 construction season, the Deerfoot Trail Improvements team would like to share an overview of the work that has happened this year.
Construction crews continue to make strides in all project areas to set up foundations and substructures for the construction of new bridges and modified interchanges. This section focuses on highlights of 2024 progress at Ivor Strong Bridge, and contains references to different types of bridge elements and structures. For ease of understanding, we’ve included a visual of the anatomy of a bridge.

Anatomy of a bridge
Over the summer, construction efforts progressed on Ivor Strong Bridge foundation work needed for Pier 3 and the installation of rebar for the east abutment. In July, crews worked on pier construction and installation of the storm line west of Ivor Strong Bridge as well as working on both abutments to create a new structure for improved traffic flow. All work is contained within the highway right-of-way. Piling work at Ivor Strong Bridge is also now completed for the year.
Berm installation
Later in August, berm construction began on the Bow River for the foundation of the second bridge that will be built parallel to the current bridge to increase the number of lanes to eight in total. Berm installation was completed on September 15, 2024.
