64 AVENUE NE

64 Avenue NE Upgrades

Construction on upgrades to 64 Avenue NE began in January 2023 and the new auxiliary lane and reconfigured ramps opened in July 2023. The upgrades included:

  • Building a new retaining wall for the east bridge abutment slope
  • Removing and replacing existing curb and pavement on ramp
  • Installing new / updated stormwater management infrastructure
  • Installing new streetlights
  • Realigning the northbound exit ramps to 64 Avenue NE
  • New pavement and curb and gutter for the auxiliary lane between 64 Avenue NE and McKnight Boulevard

This update provides a snapshot of this work to improve Deerfoot Trail.

Adding the auxiliary lane and reconfiguring the exit ramps from northbound Deerfoot Trail will improve traffic flow by lengthening the weaving zone (the amount of lane where merging and exiting vehicles cross paths)

Retaining Wall Construction

Underneath the 64 Avenue NE bridge, before and after the abutment slope is cut back to make room for the widening; a retaining wall is being constructed in its place

A shelter of tarps (called hoarding) helps to maintain a consistent temperature during concrete placing and curing
The concrete foundation has cured and forms are installed around the vertical rebar for the retaining wall
Concrete trucks use the closed ramp lane to pour a section of the retaining wall
Once the concrete retaining wall has cured, the surface is finished to remove imperfections, May 24, 2023.

Road Widening

The area for the new auxiliary lane is cut or dug to the proper depth

Pavement is removed from the ramp to eastbound 64 Avenue NE to begin work on the realignment, May 2, 2023.
After the pavement is removed, excavation to realign and regrade the new ramps to 64 Avenue NE begins, May 11, 2023.

At the south end of the project, near McKnight Boulevard, the first lift of asphalt is placed on the auxiliary lane and new curb and gutter is poured and ‘tied-in’ to the existing pavement

Open to Traffic

The reconfigured ramps re-opened to traffic in early July 2023.
